Advanced Junior Handler

I. Conditions

  • The general rules for competition apply to all CKC Events. Please refer to separate publications for more details.
  • Dogs must compete wearing only a flat collar.

II. Level 1 Obedience

  • Each dog begins with 50 points; Dogs must achieve a final score of 40 points, with each task completed, in order to receive a title for this event.
  • The dog must compete on a loose lead, not to exceed 6 feet.
  • The dog may heel at the handlers left or right side, however the handler must indicate (before competing) to the judge which side the dog will heel. Points will be deducted if the dog heels on the alternate side.
  • Points are deducted (using a 3ft rule) for lagging or forging and heeling wide or crowding the handler.
  • The judge will specify in the handler’s meeting the pattern in which the dog must heel, sit, down, come and stay.
  • The tasks include: 4 walk-arounds, 3 heels, 3 sits, 1 down, 1 down/stay and 1 come.
  • Each heel will be approximately 30’ in length.
  • Walk-arounds are done for each sit and down (excluding the down/stay)
  • When indicated by the judge the handler must make the dog down/stay, then the handler must move 20 feet from the dog for 1 minute. After 1 minute the judge will signal the handler to make the dog come, heel and sit. The handler may use voice, hand or whistle as a recall command.
  • Points are deducted if the dog moves out of position, during the stay, before being released by the handler.
  • Handlers may use both verbal and hand commands to direct the dog. If a verbal and a hand signal are used, they must be done together or they will be counted as a double command.

III. Level 2 Obedience

( Points, scoring, and tasks are the same as in Obedience Level I except for the following)

  • The dog will enter the field on lead, but must remove the lead and put it away prior to the declaration. The dog must compete off leash.
  • The tasks include: 5 walk-arounds, 3 heels, 3 sits, 2 downs, 1 down/stay and 1 come.
  • The distance for the heels will be 30 – 40 feet.
  • The time for the down/stay will be 2 minutes.

IV. Level 3 Obedience

( Points, scoring, and tasks are the same as in Obedience Level II except for the following)

  • The tasks include: 5 walk-arounds, 3 heels, 3 sits, 2 downs, 2 side changes, 1 down/stay and 1 come.
  • The dog must change sides in 2 instances (indicated by the judge), first to the opposite side, then back to heel position.
  • When indicated by the judge, the handler must make the dog down/stay, then the handler must move out of sight from the dog for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes the judge will signal the handler to make himself visible to the dog, then move 50 feet from the dog and make the dog come, heel, and sit.
  • The distance for the heels will be 40 – 50 feet.

V. Level 1 Agility

  • Each dog begins with 50 points; Dogs must achieve a final score of 40 points, with each task completed, in order to receive a title for this event.
  • The dog may compete on a loose lead not to exceed 10 feet in length, or the dog may compete off lead.
  • The dog may heel at the handlers left or right side, however the handler must indicate in the declaration as to which side the dog will heel. Points will be deducted if the dog heels on the alternate side.
  • The tasks include: 6 obstacles (In any order: 2 bar jumps, 2 tire jumps and 2 broad jumps), 12 sits (one at each side of the jump), and 7 heels (one heel up to each obstacle and one heel off course).
  • The course should be marked plainly before and after each obstacle (decided by the judge) to determine where the dog must heel, stop or sit.
  • The handler may use both verbal and hand signals to direct the dog.
  • The dog must heel to the first mark stop and sit. At the judge’s signal, the handler must send the dog over the jump and stop in the vicinity of the next mark. On the judge’s command the handler must heel the dog to the next obstacle and repeat the exercise.
  • Upon completion of the last obstacle, the team must heel off course.

VI. Level 2 Agility

( Points, scoring, and tasks are the same as in Agility Level I except for the following)

  • The dog must compete off lead.
  • The tasks include: 8 obstacles (In any order: 2 bar jumps, 2 tire jumps, 2 broad jumps and 2 tunnels), 16 sits (one at each side of the jump), 8 stays (1 after each obstacle) and 9 heels (one heel up to each obstacle and one heel off course).
  • The team must heel to the first mark stop and sit. At the judge’s signal, the handler must send the dog over or through the obstacle, stop near the next mark, and stay for 15 seconds. After 15 seconds the judge will signal the handler to heel the dog to the next mark and repeat the exercise.

VII. Level 3 Agility

( Points, scoring, and tasks are the same as in Agility Level II except for the following)

  • The tasks include: 8 obstacles (In any order: 2 bar jumps, 2 tire jumps, 2 broad jumps, 2 tunnels), 24 sits (three at each jump), 8 stays (1 for each obstacle) and 9 heels (one heel up to each obstacle and one heel off course).
  • The team must heel to the first mark stop and sit. At the judge’s signal, the handler must send the dog over or through the obstacle, stop at the next mark, and stay for 15 seconds.
  • After 15 seconds the judge will signal the handler to send the dog back over or through the obstacle to the return mark, heel and sit. The handler must then go to the dog and heel the dog to the next obstacle and repeat the exercise.

 Tracking Session:

  • Dogs must compete on a long line (15-35 ft); tracking harnesses may be used but are not required.
  • The handler may select the track layer for this level only.
  • The dog must follow a track that is 10-15 minutes old, and find the tracklayer hidden at the end. The dog must greet the person in a friendly manner.
  • The handler must remain at least 6’ behind the dog once the dog leaves the scent pad.
  • The handler may restart once in the first 5 minutes of the track. However, the track must be completed within the specified time limits.
  • The dog must stay on the track until the task is completed or the maximum amount of time has elapsed.
  • The handler may verbally encourage the dog while the dog is tracking.
  • Judges should remain approximately 25 yards behind the handler.
  • The dog must track approximately 200 yards, with one 90 ° turn.
  • The dog shall have 10 minutes to complete the track.

 Article Search Session:

  • The search area must be 25ft 2, and the boundaries must be clearly marked.
  • The article will be the similar to a man’s wallet or a man’s glove. It will be made of cloth or leather, and must lay somewhat flat when placed in the search area.
  • The judge must place one article inside the search area.
  • The article may be supplied by the handler, provided it does not exceed the requirements listed in #2 above.
  • The dog may compete off lead or on a long line.
  • The handler must state how the dog will identify the article in his declaration. Accepted methods of identification are to retrieve the article and return to the handler, sit at the article, down at the article, or stand over the article.
  • The handler may give 1 command to assist the dog into his position for identification.
  • The dog is required to find and identify the article within the maximum time of 1 minute.
  • The handler may not be in the search area with the dog or direct the dog in any way. Assistance of this nature will be scored as a zero.

VIII. Tracking/article search Level 2 & 3

( Points, scoring, and tasks are the same as in Tracking/Article Search I except for the following)

Tracking Session:

  • The dog must track approximately 300 yards, with two turns, and the track must be at least 15 minutes old.
  • The dog shall complete the track in 15 minutes.
  • The handler must remain at least 10’ behind the dog once the dog leaves the scent pad.

Article Search Session:

  • The judge must place two articles that are approximately 2” x 4”, that may be similar to keys, business card holders or the like, in the search area. These articles must be placed at least 6’ apart.
  • If the handler chooses to give a command to assist the dog into his position for identification, the dog will be penalized 5 points for each command given.
  • The dog is required to find and identify both articles within the maximum time of 2 minutes.
