Novice Junior Handler
Junior Handler Competition
The Junior Performance Series will consist of three levels, each with three
“legs” of competition in each level. The Junior Performance Series will be
conducted on a 4’- 6’ lead. The dog will wear a buckle collar. Handlers may
compete in the Junior Performance Series if they are at least 8 years old, and
may continue to compete until December 31 st of the year they turn 18 years of
age.
The jump height for the Junior Performance Series will be the height of the
dog to the elbow or the height of the handler at the knee, whichever is lower,
with a minimum height being 8”. During the Junior Performance Series events, the
handler may both encourage his dog and praise his dog. The equipment listed
within these rules is to be used as a guideline.Clubs may substitute other like
equipment with the approval of CKC Events Department.
Novice Junior Series will be geared towards ages 8-10 years. All ages
are encouraged to complete this level. However, older Junior’s with experience
may move up to the level appropriate for their age.
Intermediate Junior Series will be geared towards ages
11-14 years.
Advanced Junior Series will be geared towards ages 15 years and older.
I. Novice Junior Obedience 1
- There will be 4 markers spaced approximately 5’ apart.
The first marker will be designated as the starting point. The other three
markers will be used to heel the dog through. Once at the left side of the
starting point, the handler will make his declaration in accordance with the
judge’s instructions in the handlers meeting. Once the declaration is complete,
the judge will instruct the handler to accomplish the following tasks:
- Heel to the left side of the starting point
- Down the dog
- Sit the dog from the down position
- Heel to the right of the first marker, left of the second
marker and to the right of the third marker.
- While at the third marker, the handler will sit the dog.
- Once the judge declares “exercise finished,” the handler may
remove the dog from the field.
II. Novice Junior Obedience 2
- There will be 7 markers spaced approximately 5’ apart.
The first marker will be designated as the starting point and the other six
markers will be used to heel the dog through. The handler and dog will move to a
spot designated by the judge as the starting point. Once at the starting point,
the handler will make his declaration in accordance with the judge’s
instructions in the handlers meeting. Once the declaration is complete, the
judge will instruct the handler to accomplish the following tasks:
- Heel to the left side of the starting point.
- Down the dog, walk to the end of the lead, return to the dog
- Sit the dog, walk to the end of the lead, return to the dog
- Heel to the right of the first marker, left of the second
marker, and continue through until reaching the 7th marker.
- While at the 7th marker, the handler will sit the dog, walk
to the end of the lead, then return to the dog.
- Once the judge declares “exercise finished,” the handler may
remove the dog from the field.
III. Novice Junior Obedience 3
- There will be 7 markers spaced approximately 5’ apart.
The first marker will be designated as the starting point and the other six
markers will be used to heel the dog through.
- The handler and dog will move to a spot designated by
the judge as the starting point. Once at the starting point, the handler will
make his declaration in accordance with the judge’s instructions in the handlers
meeting. Once the declaration is complete, the judge will instruct the handler
to accomplish the following tasks:
- Heel to the left side of the starting point.
- Down the dog, walk to the end of the lead, return to the dog
- Sit the dog, walk to the end of the lead, return to the dog
- Heel to the right of the first marker, left of the second
marker, and continue through until reaching the 7th marker.
- Upon reaching the 7 th marker, the team will make a full
circle around that marker. Once the team is heading back towards the starting
point, they will weave back through the markers, starting to the right of the
first marker, and continuing to weave back to the starting marker.
- Once the team reaches the starting marker, the Handler will
sit his dog, walk to the end of the lead, turn and face the dog, make a short
pause (one second), and then walk one complete revolution around the dog,
returning to the point where the walk-around began. Once at this point, the
handler may return to his dog’s side.
- The final exercise will be a down-stay with a recall. The
handler will place his dog in the down position and walk to the end of the lead.
After a 30 second stay, the judge will signal for the handler to recall his dog.
- Once the judge declares “exercise finished,” the handler may
remove the dog from the field.
IV. Novice Junior Agility 1
- This event will consist of three open, single jumps. The
team will negotiate the course twice. Emphasis will be placed on how well the
team works together and how much control is demonstrated by the handler.
- The team will move to the starting marker where the
handler will make their declaration in accordance with the judge’s instructions
at the handler’s meeting. On instruction from the Judge, the team will heel to
the first obstacle and sit. When ordered, the team will negotiate the first
obstacle and the dog will sit on the other side. When prompted by the Judge, the
team will proceed to the next obstacle. This will continue for each obstacle,
until the course has been completed twice.
V. Novice Junior Agility 2
- This event will consist of six open, single or double
jumps. Emphasis will be placed on how well the team works together and how much
control is demonstrated by the handler.
- The team will move to the starting marker where the
handler will make their declaration in accordance with the judge’s instructions
at the handler’s meeting. On instruction from the Judge, the team will heel to
the first obstacle and sit. When ordered, the team will negotiate the first
obstacle and the dog will sit on the other side. When prompted by the Judge, the
team will proceed to the next obstacle. This will continue for each obstacle,
until the course has been completed twice.
VI. Novice Junior Agility 3
- This event will consist of six obstacles. All jumps will
be open, single or double jumps. One obstacle will be a 4’ tunnel. Emphasis will
be placed on how well the team works together and how much control is
demonstrated by the handler.
- The team will move to the starting marker where the
handler will make their declaration in accordance with the judges’ instructions
at the handler’s meeting. On instruction from the Judge, the team will heel to
the first obstacle and sit. When ordered, the team will negotiate the first
obstacle and the dog will sit on the other side. When prompted by the Judge, the
team will proceed to the next obstacle. This will continue for each obstacle,
until the course has been completed twice.
VII. Novice Junior Tracking 1
- The dog will compete on a flat collar or a tracking
harness with a 15’- 33’ lead.
- The handler will give his dog to an assistant who will
hold the dog while the handler lays a track approximately 25 yards and hides at
the end of the track. After about a 5 minute wait from the time the track is
laid, the judge will signal the assistant to run the track. The dog must find
the handler within 5 minutes.
VIII. Novice Junior Tracking 2
- The dog will compete on a flat collar or a tracking
harness with a 15’- 33’ lead. The handler will follow a track laid by someone
other than the handler. The track will be approximately 50 yards long and 10
minutes old. The team must find the person in less than 10 minutes. The dog must
greet the tracklayer in a friendly manner.
XI. Novice Junior Tracking 3
- The dog will compete on a flat collar or a tracking
harness with a 15’- 33’ lead. The handler will follow a track laid by someone
other than the handler. The track will be approximately 100 yards long and 10
minutes old. The team must find the person in less than 10 minutes. The dog must
greet the tracklayer in a friendly manner.
